Hitch is finally here! This is Book 8 in Anne Conley’s HOT Pierce Securities series, where we get to see more of retired cop, Dex!

Hitch

Amber Banks has her sights set on a fresh start at the Austin Police Department after a disastrous stint in her hometown. All she wants is to be a good cop and get the validation that goes with it. If she can get away from Dex, everything would be so much simpler. But her mama always told her nothing good ever came easy.

Dex Hollerman has just retired from the force and is trying to fit in with the guys he knows so well at Pierce Securities, only now, he’s on their side for a change. With Simon’s weird edicts hanging over his head, and his inability to get the woman who was made for cop porn fantasies out of his head, it’s a struggle.

There’s a mad gunman blowing up exploding targets in downtown Austin putting a hitch in their plans, so can they get past this crazy attraction to work together?

Or will it be their downfall?

Excerpt:

He tiptoed to the carport, ignoring the fact he was in boxers and nothing else. Nobody was looking his way. He could see Mrs. Noble peering out her window, trying to crane her neck sideways.

Dex knew he’d heard someone in his carport—knocking over a trashcan—and it probably had everything to do with the explosion, but there wasn’t anyone there now. With a grunt, he turned to go back inside and put on some pants before going across the street to help over there.

His door was locked.

Looking down at himself, Dex rolled his eyes.

Fan-fucking-tastic.

He had a gun and was out in his underwear at the scene of an explosion, probably similar to the explosions that had been rocking downtown Austin. Yeah. That wasn’t suspicious at all.

Sirens screamed in the distance. Dex didn’t have bushes around his house because that would be the perfect place for burglars and home invaders to hide. Of course, now he needed a place to hide. He looked over at his neighbor’s yard.

Somebody else’s bushes would have to do.

Twenty minutes later, he was still in the Lockhart’s bushes when Mr. Lockhart left for work. He ducked down further, hoping the enormous, red-tipped Photinia shrubs would hide him sufficiently.

When Mr. Lockhart left, another car pulled up—another police car. There were already three, plus the arson investigator’s truck. But this car was special. Dex knew it before she even got out of it. The number stenciled on the side of it meant it was her car.

Amber’s car.Hitch_Teaser

She got out and stood there, looking over the roof of the car. Bracing her hand on her forehead against the sun, she did a slow perusal of the neighborhood. Dex’s thighs were burning from squatting in the bushes for so long, but he managed to shift so he was on his knees and could see her better. But something about his movements had her zeroing in on him.

“Hey!” She started walking over, hand on her piece. “Stand up! Hands in the air!” Her voice was authoritative, with an edge of something. Not fear. Nope. But something darker than authority. It was a turn-on, but Dex wouldn’t let his brain go there, not while she couldn’t see him, and he was nothing short of a threat to her.

He knew he’d been busted, and there wasn’t really any way out of this. Maybe she would show some pity on him and let him get some pants.

Holding his hands up in the air, he stood slowly, his gun dangling from one finger by the trigger guard.

“Oh, for the love of God,” she muttered when he came into view. He could only imagine what he looked like. “Are you even wearing clothes?” Standing in the bushes, she couldn’t see he was not in fact wearing clothes. She gestured for him to throw the gun, and he complied, tossing it at her feet. Lips pressed into a thin line, she holstered her weapon, levelling him with a glare. She was pissed as hell. Pissed as she was, though, Amber stared at his chest, mouth agape, eyes wide. A strange thrill went through him, a definite sense of pride. Dex would not have gotten this reaction from her with his old body.

“My Haines.” Dex tried a grin and managed a small one. Her anger was helping with his discomfort, but only, like, an iota. Surely, he’d laugh at this someday. Right now, all he could think about was the fact he would for sure be the talk of the task force tomorrow morning.

Hitch_Teaser2

“Alright. Turn around and put your hands on your head.” She reached for the cuffs at her back, and Dex’s cock inappropriately jumped and strained.

“Why are you cuffing me?” Even though he was doing exactly what she said.

“You are at the scene of a crime in very suspicious circumstances. You turned up in my investigation yesterday, and now this. And if nothing else, you are in violation of a code or two, Austin or not.”

“Keep it weird,” he muttered as she cuffed him, none too gently. Still, the erection tented the front of his boxer briefs. “Let me take you to dinner sometime.” It was worth a shot. She had relented and given him her name.

But the scoff she let out told him he was pushing his luck. Still she had him in cuffs, and his mind was going places. Oh, the places …

She led him across the street and when they got to her car, he turned on her. Her eyes widened when she got a look at his bulge.

“I live right there. Someone was in my carport and I was checking it out when the explosion happened. I locked myself out and have been outside ever since.” His explanation did nothing.

“Great. Get in the car.”

“You’re detaining me?”

“I’m securing my crime scene. Get the fuck in the car.”

When she opened the door, he allowed her to tuck his head in as he folded his bulky frame into the vehicle. His erection needed an adjustment, but he didn’t think she would go for it. Instead, he just hoped it would wilt on its own.

But she’d cuffed him.

He shouldn’t be so aroused by that, but he couldn’t help himself.

Cuffs.

ARC Review of “On Her Guard”, by Skyla Madi @Skyla_Madi @GiveMeBooksBlog

A promise to his mother on her death-bed has him retiring from the military, but he has a hard time readjusting to life outside of the service to this country. Ben is a man who has done four top-secret tours in the Middle East, now he has to work a job where he starts at the bottom and fetches coffee. He can’t keep a job now because they are all boring to him now.

You can take the man out of the military, but you cannot take the military out of the man.  When he takes a job as a security guard, he makes a mistake and feels that it is his responsibility to correct it and his military training kicks in.

He has a one night stand with a beautiful young woman, Sera, who sneaks out to hang out with her friends. Then a few days later he meets her father by accident. This meeting could change his life and it can also bring the adrenalin rush back for him, but it could also be as dangerous as his tours in the Middle East.

I enjoyed “On Her Guard” and the suspense and worry about what might happen to Ben if Sera’s father finds out the truth of their relationship. The fact that Sera felt she had to protect Ben, shows that she actually has feelings for him. The characters in this book are well rounded and the heat between them is great.

ARC Review of “Villains and Vodka”, by Alta Hensley @GiveMeBooksBlog @AltaHensley

Two people with a dark past who find each other and find their light. Harley Crow is dangerous, dark, and ruthless, but Marlowe Masters has seen the real Harley. She is a waitress at a mens club and sees him there a lot. She can’t help but be drawn to him, and want him. Harely believes he is the dark man that he portrays, but once he has Marlowe in his clutches his outlook changes.

This is the first book I have read by Alta Hensley, but I have to say that it will not be the last. This book is dark, thrilling, and beautiful all at the same time. I love the way that Harley and Marlowe connect and find their safety net in each other. The characters are well developed and well written in this book. Their pasts are dark, but they still have the ability to love. That’s the beautiful part of this book. The fact that they may be broken, but they are not destroyed completely.

I have to agree with Alta’s disclaimer on this book, “If you don’t like a splash of shock, a dash of taboo, and a heavy dose of sex, then don’t take a sip of this TOP SHELF cocktail”. You will get all of this and more reading “Villains and Vodka”.

Excerpt
Ethan Everest
Every female here has eyed me up and down, even the ones
with boyfriends. They don’t even try to hide it. They want me
to see. They want me to know I can have them if I want them.
Except her. Blue dress. Red lips. Hair the color
of a golden sunset in winter.
Several girls made themselves more than available. I was
offered a fast fuck in the bathroom within fifteen minutes of arriving.
Fantasies may be taking over, but there’s only one woman who catches my
eyes—the demure beauty sitting on the couch.
I want to stare at her.
She’ll see me though.
I want to sit next to her.
There are no more spots on the small futon.
I want to talk to her.
What do I say when she makes all the blood rush from my
brain and shoot straight to my dick? Damn, I want her.
She’s given me no reason to think of her naked beneath me.
No indication that I should have dirty thoughts about those delectable lips.
Absolutely no sign that I could have the pleasure of stroking her bare back
while I take her from behind.
Fuck. Me.
While images of her cloud my thoughts, I’m not sure I have a
shot in hell of even taking up a minute of her time, much less a night. Nope,
not one clue if I have a chance with this beauty.
I’ll take the risk, something I’m adept at doing. More often
than not I win in the end. She won’t be an easy target, but nothing worth
having ever is. I’m determined to find out if her tongue is as seductive as her
eyes.
Although she brings out my instinctive side, this is not
about sex and passing time. It’s about spending time with someone who
challenges my mind while turning on my body.
Nudging the guy who lives here, I signal across the room and
ask, “What’s her name?”
“Who?” He follows my gaze. “The hottie on the couch?”
Heart-shaped face, flawless skin, ample tits, hourglass
shape at her waist. She’s not built like a girl who doesn’t eat. She’s shaped
like a woman I want to meet. “Yeah.”
“Dariya Rostavik. She’s fucking hot.” He pats my shoulder.
“And single. If my girlfriend wasn’t here, I’d be all over that.”
“Cuz you’re an asshole.” Her name, Dariya, rolls around my
mouth, spikey instead of rolling off the tongue naturally. The name doesn’t fit
her.
“Pretty much.” He laughs. “You gonna hit it, Everest?”
“I don’t know.” I feign interest to him, lying to get his eyes
off her. “Fuck, they scored again.” My diversion works, and his attention is
back on the big screen.
The truth is, I don’t know if I’m going to hookup with her.
I’ve caught her looking at me when she thinks I don’t notice. But is
she looking at me the way I’m looking at her?
Was I busted moving closer when she was talking to her
friend? Did she see me eavesdropping to hear her voice? Did she notice when I
joined a conversation behind her to be closer? Or that I stepped out of the way
of the fridge when she wanted a bottle of water?
I never get shot down by women. I’ve lived on easy street
when it comes to my looks and, from what I’m told, my personality, attracting
the most attractive. Something tells me I might be rejected by her.
She’s not like the other girls here. Nothing about her fits
in this environment—a party with a bunch of guys getting drunk while watching
sports and yelling at the TV and girls dragged here by their boyfriends or
convinced by their friends to stop by.
She’s an innocent among sycophants. Everyone wants something
from me, except her. Sexy and smart—speaks right to my heart.
I catch her eyes on me again. This time I stare back until
she looks away with a pretty pink coloring her cheeks.
This game with her is much more interesting than the one on
TV. I follow her with my eyes as she gets up and joins a group by the window.
She seems to know the other girl, but not so much the two guys.
Good, I inwardly growl.
Keith hits me in the chest. “Who do you have your eyes on?”
“The woman by the window.”
My best friend shakes his head. “No. Check out eleven
o’clock. She’s a model from Romania. Hot as fuck.”
“Not interested. I want more than a fuck.”
“I’m sorry. Have we met?” His sarcasm is as annoying as he’s
been lately at the office.
“I’m for real.”
“So am I.”
I exhale and shoot him a glare. “I really am. I can fuck
anyone. I want to spend time with someone who interests me.”
“You’re working too much. You’re so caught up in your head
lately you’re missing what life is really about.”
Crossing my arms over my chest, I indulge him. “And what is
life really about?”
“Doing everything in your power to get it while the gettin’s
good.”
“Are we talking about business or women?”
“Both.”
The model is hot, but I feel like I’ve been there done that.
I don’t care what he wants. He can have shallow, meaningless relationships.
They’re more hassle than they’re worth.
Glancing toward the woman outside, an ease comes over me,
releasing some of the pent-up pressure that’s been expanding lately. “You go
for the model. I’ll go for Dariya.”
“Dariya?” I’m knocked on the arm, and he points toward the
couch. “That’s Dariya, man.”
“The model?”
“Yeah,” he says, laughing.
Thank fuck I didn’t go outside and call the beauty by the
wrong name. “I’ll be back.” I grab two cans and head toward the window. I stop
briefly by the group she was talking to prior, but they’re buried deep into a
conversation about American consumerism. I’m not interested in their philosophical
views on finances. The only thing I’m interested in is the pretty woman sitting
alone outside. The woman excuses herself and I ask, “Hey, you guys know her
name?”
They look outside. “Singer.”
“She’s a singer?”
“No,” he says, chuckling. “Her name is Singer. Singer Davis.
She came here with her friend, Melanie, who just left.”
I don’t hear most of what he says because I’m stuck on the
woman with the red lips. Singer. Singer Davis. “Thanks.”
Singer’s been sitting on that fire escape by herself long
enough to not feel like I’m invading her space, like she’s taken over my
thoughts. I seize the moment and climb out.
This is where our story begins . . .

Author bio

I like to think of myself as a writer of thoughtful, contemporary crime novels that are complex and involve situations that change lives. I live in the west-country counties of Wiltshire and Dorset, and set my novels in this area. The early novels in the Sophie Allen series are based on the Isle of Purbeck, that most beautiful of coastal areas. But the rest of the county of Dorset does get a look in.

I’m a retired teacher who has tinkered with writing for much of my life. My previous efforts have usually been directed towards short stories but I have always felt that crime novels would be one of my final choices, particularly if a developing storyline allows me to introduce one or two social issues, albeit with a light touch.

I write because I constantly create scenes, people, imaginary conversations and unusual situations in my head. I have always done so, ever since I was a child. Using the richness of the English language to set down these creations in words is a great joy.

MY REVIEW:

The book cover says “A gripping crime thriller full of twists”, boy is that a statement! This book took right off on the first page and kept me turning the pages right up through the end. I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish this book and I read it in one day. This is the sixth book in a the series, but it is a standalone book. I have not read the previous books in this series.

There are three suicides that have happened over a course of five years, with two of those being within six months of each other and recent. The first one is discovered after the investigation of the third suicide that just happened. There is one common denominator in the suicides, but it will take some digging and true investigative work to find this common denominator and then find out the rest of the details of the deaths and how they are linked. DCI Sophie Allen and her team will link everything together eventually. DCI Sophie is a smart investigator who doesn’t let up when she is on a case. She seems to have an ability to read people and figure out if she should push or back off. Her and her team work very well together and they are all very good at what they do.

If you like a book that will keep your mind reeling throughout and even after, then this book is a good book to pick up. Just be prepared to not want to put it down. I give this book a 5 star rating and look forward to reading more of Michael Hambling’s books in the future.

Review of “When A Stranger Comes”, by Karen S. Bell @RosieAmber1 #RBRT @KarenSueBell

Quite a different read from what I am used to. I did not expect this book to turn out like it did. I liked the book and hated to put it down. I needed to find out what was going on in the story and try to understand Alexa’s story.

I have to say that in the beginning I wasn’t sure if this was a book I would like or not. The prologue was good, and drew me in, but the first chapter made me question the rest of the book. Wow, was I wrong. After I got through the first page of the first paragraph, I was really drawn in and wanted to hurry up and read the book to find out what was going on.

An author who is writing a trilogy and has just finished the third book in the trilogy when things go awry for her. Alexa’s reality comes into question after she receives a phone call from her copy editor and friend Margaret. Is Alexa dreaming, is she writing a new story, or is this her new reality? Who is real and who is a figment of imagination? These are all questions that were going through my mind while reading this book.

A story full of angst, mind games, and questions of reality. If you enjoy a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, once you get into it, then you really need to read “When A Stranger Comes”. I give this book a 4.5 star review.

**** FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY ****

I don’t normally do this, but today I need to post something really personal. I am only posting this to my blog because I just needed to get it off my mind so that I can concentrate on work. I know that it won’t clear it from my mind, but I needed to get the thoughts out of my head today.

We were informed on Tuesday night that a cousin, Jimmy, passed in his sleep. He had a heart attack. The issue I am having with this is that he was only 33 years old. He was a young man who had so much going for him. He had a rough start, but he had come around and had made good choices in his life. He had a beautiful little girl who was the apple of his eye. His mother is my husbands cousin. We spent Thanksgiving together when our kids were young and the tradition was carried on. Up until the past couple of years, we were still celebrating Thanksgiving together. He was one year older than my oldest child. He had one of those smiles that lit up his face when he genuinely smiled at you. He had those smiles of recognition where they didn’t reach his eyes, but when he was truly happy and enjoying life, his face just lit up when he smiled. He had a heart of gold and was such a sweet little boy, and grew up to be a sweet young man.

I can remember during Thanksgiving when his mother would stress so because he was such an active little boy. He was a hyper little boy and his mother always worried too much some times that he was  being loud and rambunctious, but he was never doing anything wrong. She is a wonderful mother. Jimmy always held a special place in my heart because he was such a sweetheart, and always seemed to be happy. He was a handsome young man, a great father, a hard worker, and a special young man. I hope that he is with his grandmother, niece, and other family members that left before him and looking down on his daughter, sister, mother, and anyone else that he loves.

Please remember to tell the ones you love that you love them, keep in mind that life is too short to hold grudges, be mean or angry with people. Enjoy the life you have and spend as much time as you can doing what you want.

RIP Jimmy, you will be missed by many. You were a loved young man who made a difference in many lives. Love you Jim.

Review of “Innocent Lies”, by Chris Collett

Another great book by Chris Collett. I love DI Mariner. His perseverance while working on a case is what gets the results needed to find the person responsible for the crimes he is working to solve. His loner personality works for him at times, but can also work against him. His working relationship with Tony Knox is a little odd at first, but after working their first case together, and living together, they are comfortable with each other and could be considered friends, although neither one of them would admit that.

The disappearance of two very different teenagers brings the station into a lot of turmoil. With an Acting Detective Chief Inspector who wants the job permanently and a prominent families daughter missing and the son of an acquaintance from repeated domestic violence calls missing, DI Mariner really needs a break. Tony Fisk has regained his Detectives shield back, but has to work through his personal life if he wants to enjoy doing this work.

This story had me guessing a lot about what happened and who the culprit was. I was completely taken by surprise to find out who the bad guy was in this story. Great job of keeping the reader guessing and the suspense going in this story. I love a a great story that I cannot figure out who the suspect is right off. I love the challenge of guessing, but I want to be surprised and Chris Collett does that with the twists and turns that she puts in her stories.

I loved this story as much as I did “Deadly Lies”, by Chris Collett. I look forward to more stories about DI Mariner and Tony Knox.

Review of “Thirty Days of Shame”, by Ginger Talbot @HGRomanceDeals

WOW! Great Read!! This is a dark book, but it is written very well. It was an emotional roller coaster to read. I was angry, sad, disgusted, and happy at times through this read. I read “Thirty Days of Pain” first to get an idea of the rest of the story, and both had me hating to put the book down.

Sergei is a damaged young man who’s only thoughts in life are revenge for his pain and treatment as a boy. He wants to make sure that everyone involved pays for the pain and torture that he and his brother and his friends from childhood went through.

Willow is a young woman who is born into a family that makes their money off of others pain. She is a pawn in Sergei’s revenge, until he has her and realizes that she is the only person who can keep the darkness at bay.

Can Willow help Sergei heal? Will Sergei destroy Willow? I will have to wait until January to find out if they will ever be able to be happy. I look forward to reading more of their story. I enjoyed both “Thirty Days of Pain” and “Thirty Days of Shame”, they were great reads.

All of the characters in this story make you want to learn more about them and see how things will work out for them.
