Isabel Long was a reporter in the hillside area of Massachusetts until she was fired after a large corporation took over the small paper that she was working at. She is a widowed, mature woman that lives with her mother, works at a local bar, Roosters, at a part-time bar tender.
I love Isabel Long and her mother. They are partners in solving crimes. Most of the crimes they are solving are cold cases. Maria, Isabel’s mother is a 93-year-old woman who has a heavy foot when driving, enjoys reading and has a simple, sensible way of looking at cases when Isabel is trying to figure things out. Isabel’s relationship with Jack may be in trouble in this story when a surprise guest shows up.
I love the characters in this series and way that the story is written is entertaining. Ms. Livingston writes these stories as if Isabel is telling the story herself, and when she mentions someone or something that happened in a previous book in the series, she states, “You know how that turned out.” I love it.
Isabel and Maria are trying to figure out how Gary Beaumont’s older brother Cary Moore, died six years earlier. It was listed as a suicide, but Gary thinks he was pushed. The case will lead Isabel to some interesting discoveries along the way. The suspense and twists in this book were great. Isabel will go through more danger while she is trying to solve this cold case. As usual, she will be in danger from those that she is investigating and that are on her list of suspects.
I give this story a 4.5-star review and highly recommend it to readers that enjoy stories with suspense, twists, crime, and a woman PI who loves being able to snoop. I really like Ms. Livingston’s writing style.
Isabel Long is a bit banged up from her last case with a broken collarbone and her arm in a sling. But that doesn’t stop her from pouring beer at the Rooster Bar or taking her third case with Gary Beaumont, a local drug dealer who once terrorized her. Gary is convinced his brother didn’t jump off a bridge known for suicides. Somebody pushed him.
Gary’s brother was a boozer who drove for a highway crew. But what interests Isabel and her ‘Watson’ — her 93-year-old mother who lives with her — is that the man wrote poetry.
The chief suspects are one of Gary’s business associates and a famous poet who plagiarized his brother’s poetry for an award-winning book. Yes, he was that good.
As a journalist, Isabel did regular meetups with her sources for stories. She called it checking the traps. She does the same as a private investigator, and this time, she’ll make sure she doesn’t get caught in one.
Joan Livingston is the author of novels for adult and young readers. Checking the Traps, published by Crooked Cat Books, is the third in the mystery series featuring Isabel Long, a longtime journalist who becomes an amateur P.I. The first two are Chasing the Case and Redneck’s Revenge.
An award-winning journalist, she started as a reporter covering the hilltowns of Western Massachusetts. She was an editor, columnist, and the managing editor of The Taos News, which won numerous state and national awards during her tenure.
After eleven years in Northern New Mexico, she returned to rural Western Massachusetts, which is the setting of much of her adult fiction, including the Isabel Long mystery series.
Wow! This story starts off with a sexy tryst and pulls you right in. It’s full of danger, family drama, and hot, sexy men.
Valerie Mendoza’s story is not a nice one, but she is able to find a happy life now. A woman who was tricked into going to Mexico with a boyfriend who turned out to be a real loser, she is acquired by the head of the Mendoza Cartel and finds the love she has been looking for. Her parents visit from Arizona and stress their worry for her and their grandson, Francis, living a life in the Cartel.
Arellano El León Mendoza has finally found something worth living for. Being the head of a Cartel is not a safe life, but he will do whatever it takes to stay alive and keep his wife Valerie and their son Francis safe. He’s found a way to ensure that he is not the only man to protect them and ensure their safety, he two lieutenants will protect them with their lives as well. While away from his compound, visiting Valerie’s parents in Cancun, they will encounter danger and escape death, not only once, but twice.
This story was a quick read for me. It was a fast-paced book that takes the reader from a nice family vacation with some drama to more drama while the family has to run for their lives and seek shelter to keep out of the sights of someone who wants to harm them.
I enjoyed this story and give it a 4-star review. If you are a reader who enjoys hot, sexy, Alpha males, and stories of cartels and danger, I highly recommend this story. The cover is quite sext too.
Daryl “Zeus” Anderson is a man who keeps to himself, but he also keeps track of all the men who work for him and his partners, Mac and Jon, in Cover Six Security. His one-night stand in the Caribbean, while attending Mac and TR’s wedding, won’t leave his mind. That’s why he has to keep busy. He also has to fight his past from creeping up on him and distracting him. When he gets a package from his old commanding officer, he will find a lot more than what he is expecting.
Kelsey Davis is a woman who has to keep moving to keep her daughter, Paige, safe. Her father told her to go to Daryl for help and protection, but she doesn’t know him, nor does she trust easily. She’s trying to keep her daughter from a life of danger and will do whatever she can to make sure that Paige is safe. She may be on the run, but she’s not a woman who cowers easily. Being raised by a military man taught her how to take care of herself and set her up to be able to stay under the radar.
I loved Mac’s story, and Daryl’s story was just as good. The men of Cover Six Security are a great team. They work well together on their cases and to keep each other safe and grounded. Daryl and Kelsey will fight to find their future. The story is well written, and the characters are awesome. The Cover Six Security guys are a great team, they are the type of guys that when they find the woman that they want to spend their lives with, they will fall so hard. This is the case with Daryl just like it was Mac.
I give this story a 4.5-star review and am looking forward to Ryder’s book. I highly recommend this book and series to any reader who enjoys suspense, ex-military, and Alpha males who will be taken down by a beautiful woman.
The men never back down to danger, but always fall hard for love in the Cover Six Security series by USA Today Bestselling Author Lisa B. Kamps.
Daryl “Zeus” Anderson walks the edge of danger. Strong. Dependable. Always in control–except for that one night in a tropical paradise that still haunts him. When an old friend calls in a favor, Daryl answers the call, never expecting to come face-to-face with the woman who damn near shattered his restraint–and his heart.
Kelsey Davis has been running for the last five years: for her safety, for her sanity, for more than just her life. The dangerous game she’s been thrust into is nearing an end and she’s forced to turn to the man her father swears will guard her with his life–the same man she’s already run away from once.
The clock is ticking and Kelsey needs to decide if she can trust her new guardian with more than her heart. Because in this game, there’s more at stake than love–and making the wrong decision could cost much more than just their lives.
Lisa B. Kamps is a USA Today Bestselling Author who loves cheering loudly for her favorite hockey team, the Washington Capitals. She came about the fandom honestly as she lives in Maryland with her husband and two sons (who are mostly sorta-kinda out of the house), one very spoiled Border Collie, two cats with major attitude, several head of cattle, and entirely too many chickens to count.
While Lisa writes a lot of hockey – one such series, The Baltimore Banners, features “…hard-hitting, heart-melting hockey players…” [USA Today], on and off the ice – she also delves deep ahem into the heat with a series of hot and heroic firefighters who put more than their lives on the line in the Firehouse Fourteen series. She’s recently introduced a whole new team of hot hockey players who play hard and love even harder in her Banners’ spin-off series, The York Bombers. The Chesapeake Blades–a romance series featuring women’s hockey–also recently launched with WINNING HARD. Her newest series, Cover Six Security, is launching now!

I never expected to be locked out of my room basically naked in a total blackout. Thinking that would be the biggest shock of my night was my first mistake.
After years of struggling with alcoholism and drug abuse, I got clean and put my best foot forward. I became the man worthy of Lacey Parrish’s love and made the girl with the sad brown eyes my wife. But I’m not the only one in our marriage with demons. Diagnosed a manic depressive, Lacey struggles daily with her mind, never willing to succumb to the stigma of mental illness.
The odds have always been stacked against us, but the stakes have never been this high. Pregnant with our child, Lacey is forced to choose between her mind and the baby we wished for.
I can take pain, but I can’t take hers.
Helpless and at the mercy of all the things that plague us, I turn to my past.
It’s always our favorite sins that do us in.
Suffering through hell, hoping love is enough for us to survive one more blackout.
This is part one of the Leather & Lace duet and over 70,000 words.
Once upon a time there lived a young girl, who battled depression and an older man who struggled with addiction. They fell head over heels in love with one another and foolishly thought their love could conquer all, that they’d beat the odds and live happily ever after. But some of the most tragic love stories are disguised as the greatest fairytales.
I thought we were past the pain, that we could finally be happy. I never imagined I’d be pregnant, alone and battling mental illness while my husband overdosed in prison. I also didn’t think he’d miss our daughter’s birth because a judge mandated him to rehab for ten months.
Now, he’s free and I’m broken beyond repair. Disconnected from everything I ever loved, including my newborn baby, I’m the casualty of another blackout.
Two tortured souls, navigating Hell, trying to find that happily ever after—wondering if it even exists.

I read lots of books, from mythology retellings to literary fiction and I love to reread books from childhood, this is a place to voice my thoughts for fun. I also like to ramble about things such as art or nature every now and again.
