ARC Review of Ash: Colors of Crime Book 8, by Sophie Lark

Ash

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 out of 5

Dominik Petrov is the younger brother of Ivan Petrov the head of the Petrov Family Bratva. He and his brother are close, they even live together with cousins and Bratva members in an old monastery. Dominik has his job and he is particular about how it is done. When he runs into trouble one night while transporting their product, he has to find a way to get it back and keep the police from causing them more trouble. He needs to send a message that the Petrov’s will not take interruptions of their products by the police.

Lara Erdeli lives a life in hiding. She is hiding from a devastating past and trying to get retribution for that past. She loves art and is tired of being cooped up in a small flat by herself so much. When she finally gets the freedom she craves, her life will take a swift turn. The man protecting her and keeping her safe is the new Chief of Police in St. Petersburg. He is incorruptible and determined to clean the streets of the Bratva. He can’t be bought, but there may be a way to keep him off the Petrov Bratva’s backs.

I really loved this story. Dom is a great character. He is a tough man, a Bratva brother, but he also has a side that you would not expect to find. He falls hard for Lara and is determined to keep her and protect her. I enjoy the characters of this story as well as the other books in the series. They are entertaining to read. They’re loyal, deadly, and they are not afraid to do what is needed to ensure the safety of their family and loved one. I give this story a 5-star review and suggest that you read the entire series. I also read the Series Finale Epilogue, available at the end of the book, and loved it as well. I do wish that it had been longer though. If you are a reader of Mafia, Bratva, Alpha males, and strong women, you will love this series.

“What a ride Nightingale was! Giulia Lagomarsino really upped their emotions with Florrie and Alec’s story.” ~The Art of Reading

“WOW! What a roller-coaster ride this book was! Incredible! So many ups and downs and emotion. An entertaining addition to the series!” ~Goodreads Review (Jennifer)

Florrie

I don’t do well with emotions and yucky love stuff. I do the best I can, but at the end of the day, I’m better at showing someone I love them by fighting for them. That’s the way I’ve always been and how I’ll always be. And I have one helluva fight ahead of me. I’ll do anything for the people I love, but what I didn’t expect was to be fighting the one person I thought would always be on my side. I don’t know if I can ever forgive him for this or if we can ever move forward. Some betrayals are just unforgivable.

Alec
Life is going great. I have the woman I love by my side and a kid that is quickly becoming a huge part of my life. What can go wrong? Then it happens. One phone call changes my world in such a profound way that I’m not sure anything will ever be the same again. I risk losing it all with my decisions, but I have to stand up for what I believe is right. I just hope that when the dust settles, I still have someone on my side.

I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.

Holy Cow!! I won’t say that both of them made me angry, but boy Nightingale sure did.

Florrie is a team member of Reed Security. She is tough, strong, and independent. She’s also selfish, bullheaded, and single minded, in my opinion. She and her teammate Alec hid their relationship for three years before they made it official and let the rest of Reed Security know that they were a couple. Of course, Craig, their other team member figured it out sooner than the rest, by pure coincidence.

Alec is the lead for Team 5 of Reed Security. He makes a lot of decisions for the team when they are in the field. The only problem is that he has a hard time shutting that off when they are home and he doesn’t discuss things with Florrie and Craig, which causes a lot of problems. He wants to protect Florrie and she is so independent that she has a hard time letting him take care of her.

Reid is a young boy that left a bad situation at his stepfather’s house. He ended up on the streets and ran into Florrie and Alec one night and instead of turning him over to the authorities, they took him in and cared for him. He’s a young teen and has found a home where he feels safe and loved. When his temporary custody comes into jeopardy it causes all kinds of issues with Reed Security.

These two are both strong willed and pig headed, but Florrie really made me angry through this book. She couldn’t see anything besides her own thoughts and feelings. She was determined to do what was needed, but she didn’t stop to think of the repercussions. I enjoyed the story, the tensions, the characters, the comedic relief, and the overall story of this book. While I was angry a lot with Florrie, I could understand her devastation, but not her actions and treatment of Alec. I love the character in this series, and I devour these books, but this one had me wanting to throat punch Florrie most of the time. Her actions and words were hurtful and destructive. I felt that Alec deserved better than what she was giving him. I give this story a 5-star review and look forward to more of the Reed Security Series. I would love to see stories of the kids as they grow up, especially and Reid and Caitlyn. If you like stories with Alpha males, strong women, security details, and crazy families, you will love this series, and you should one-click it right away.

SNEAK PEEK! Jay: Texas Country Criminals by Bry Ann @AuthorBryAnn

A sneak peak at Jay’s book.

HERE IS THE PROLOGUE FOR JAY:

*This is unedited and subject to change.

Prologue:

Jay:

I thought loving someone would be a dream. Easy, passionate, beautiful… my family sure makes it look that way; ma and pa, Kingston and Blythe, Derek and Iris and now Hunter and Taylor. My brother Hunter, the least likely person to fall in love.

So with my arm wrapped around this tiny, vulnerable woman I wonder why it’s not like that for me. It’s terrifying, controlling and delicate. It’s not her fault, it’s mine. It’s my fault I’m this way. It’s my fault I have my arm around her waist, acting like I need to protect her from my own family. A family I love with all my heart.

Everything is going well. It’s going better than I could have hoped for how awkward I’m makin’ this.

“Hey Jay,” Taylor, Hunter’s girlfriend, greets me before glancing down at the unexpected woman in my arms. “It’s so good to see you here. How are you?” Taylor asks Kailee directly.

Kailee trembles a bit in my arms but offers Taylor a tiny smile.

“Good, thank you,” she squeaks.

“That’s good to hear,” Taylor replies. “I-”

BANG!

Taylor’s interrupted by a sound that instantly makes my whole body coil with tension. Growing up in a family where my father, two brothers and myself are loan sharks I’ve heard the sound of a gun before. But never has it scared me this much. Taylor immediately drops to the ground and covers her head. Kailee’s entire body goes stiff in my arms.

And oddly enough, this is the moment I know without a doubt that I’m in love.

Because for the first time in my life I don’t put my family first. I put her first.

I carry her to safety before going to my father and brothers who I know will be on the front lines, assessing the threat to keep everyone safe. I go to them to protect them from the threat. To have their backs.

“Hunter,” I hear Kingston whisper when I enter the room. His voice is full of concern, something our older brother doesn’t let slip lightly.

“No one appears to be here still,” Hunter mutters.

I glance over at the corner of the room to see a bullet through a picture of me, my brothers and pa. That photo was taken the day I joined the family business.

“Jay, Hunt,” Kingston calls for our attention again. There’s something in his voice that has dread settling in my stomach.

Kingston holds out a note for Hunter. Hunter takes it and holds it out so I can read it too. From the very first sentence my heart stops.

Well hello Shelby boys-

Guess you’re wondering where your father is, eh?
Funny, I’ve wondered where my money went many times.

I’ve wondered where my girl Kailee is too, more recently.

Guess I figured I finally got something back from the man who ruined my fucking life by taking my money and birthing you shits.

You wanna save him?

Fine.

Hand over the girl.

We can call it even.

Bring her to your favorite spot Hunter.

See you soon boys-

Xav

“Over my dead body,” I growl immediately.

Kingston schools his features, but I know he’s panicking. He’s gonna carry the burden of finding our father and keeping our family safe even if that burden is not all his to carry.

“I know,” Kingston murmurs. “Pop wouldn’t want that. He always knew the risk of the business. Someone’s fucking with our family. We handle that ourselves. Jay, can you protect her?”

Her being Kailee. Damn right I can… I give a sharp nod.

“We still need you Jay,” Hunter says. No, pleads. “We need you. Pop’s missing.”

Hunter has always been the jokester of the family, but in moments of crisis, of pain, he’s the most vulnerable. Honestly, I’d say more so than Iris, our little sister, even.

“If you think for one second I won’t have your backs you’re wrong,” I tell them, shaking my head. “We’ll find pop, alive.”

“Alive,” Hunter murmurs.

“Who’s gonna tell mom?” I whisper, knowing this will shatter her. Ma and pop have one of those classic love stories people only dream about.

“Fuck,” Hunter hisses.

Kingston nods, ever the strong one. “I will. I made a promise to pop to protect his girls. To protect this family. I won’t fail him. Now, let’s get our families home safe. We’ll meet back here in thirty minutes. And… pray,” King whispers. “Pa will need it.”

I turn back to the living room, thinking of the woman I have locked up safe in ma and pop’s shelter. A woman I made promises to. Promises I intend to keep.

I can keep them all safe.

Kailee. Kingston and Blythe. Hunter and Taylor. Ma. Derek and Iris. Iris’s two kids- Aria and Carson. Kingston and Blythe’s kid- Conner. Hunter and Taylor’s adopted daughter of sorts- Willow. Pa.

That’s the lie I tell myself.

Unfortunately, life doesn’t always play out how we pray it will, does it?

Eeeek. I hope y’all are as excited as I am. I am loving Jay so far and ADORING Kailee. She is probably one of my favorite female leads so far. This book has soooo many unexpected turns I really think y’all are gonna be shocked. As I reach the end of Jay I’m a little sad this is the last Shelby book, but I gotta end it sometime and this is the perfect book to do it!

Book #8 in the Heaven Hill Shorts Series is now available! Read My Review!!

Drew

Drew Walker

My life changed the day my daughter was shoved into the back of a van on the orders of a man I considered my brother.

It’s never going to be the same again.
I’m never going to be the same again.

But I’m being given another chance to do everything right this time.

And I’ll be damned if I screw it up.

My Review:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 out of 5

He needs to forgive himself and learn to move on, but, how can he?

Drew can’t seem to get over that his daughter was kidnapped and the destruction of his MC and the fear of losing everything he holds dear. He needs to come to terms with what happened, and that Justice is home, alive, and fighting to move on with her life.

I have enjoyed these shorts and this story did not disappoint. Drew is a man who loves his family deeply and is destroyed that an MC brother betrayed not only him but the entire MC and hurt his little girl. Now he’s afraid he’s going to lose everything. Hearing Drew’s point of view on the abduction of Justice and the aftermath is heartbreaking. He’s a good father, husband, and loyal brother to the MC. I give this short a 5-star review and suggest that you read Heaven Hill Next Generation before you pick up the shorts, but you won’t be disappointed. Ms. Briscoe does a great job with some hard situations and you can’t help but love the characters of Heaven Hills or any of her other books.

Excerpt
“Nymph.” His voice is deep, hollow. Mesmerizing like a siren. Butterflies spill in my belly and blood rushes to my ears. I hate it when people give me nicknames as if I’m a kid, but for some strange reason, I always allow Devious to do it.

He grabs a few strands of my curls, twirls them around his finger. “I always wanted to know if your hair was as soft as it looks.” He runs his thick fingers through my thick curly hair. “Your hair feels like silk. It’d be easy to wrap around my finger if I were to fuck you.”

My cheeks burn hotter than a log in a fire. Jesus, this man. I’ve never had another to say bold words to me. Atrocious never been this bold. I wonder how it would feel to fuck Devious. But, instead I’m stuck with slutty Underboss of Las Vegas that I have no interest in.

“Giving me a compliment won’t get you in my panties, Devious. You’re going to have to try harder than that.” I flip my hair over my shoulders and straighten my spine like a pole.

His laugh is low and sinister. It chills me to the bones. So much lust burns in his eyes that it could burn down this whole building. My heart beats into a frenzy and my mouth becomes bone dry.

Devious runs his thick fingers through his inky black hair then shoves them into his pocket. “What will?” His tone is elegant, just like him. His eyes drift to my lips and I shake my head, smiling.

“Thirty million and a pet mermaid,” I joke.

He leans down, whispers. “Do you accept checks or cash?” His voice tickles my ear. A flush crawled to my neck, making its way to my cheeks. Then my eyes catch his expensive loafers and trail up to his black tailored suit. Devious is wealthy beyond reason. If wealth was an aura, then you could feel it from him.

“I’m joking.” I smile.

“Well, I wasn’t.” There is a ting of smugness in his tone.

I bite my bottom lip and pick at the dead skin around my thumb. “Why are you here? If you’re looking for Papa, then I’m afraid you have missed him. He left an hour ago.” I lie.

“Did he now?” He smirks wickedly.

“Yeah, he went to…to pick us up some dinner from Chipotle.”

He taps his index finger on my nose. “You were never good at lying.” He tsk. “Where is he hiding?”

“Why would I lie to you? I told you that he’s out getting us dinner.”

Annoyance paints his face. “It’s a crime to lie to your Don. If you lie to me again, then I’ll have no choice, but to punish you,” he threatens. Devious is the Don of all the five familigas in the United States which makes him one of the most powerful men in the country. “Again, Where is Lex?”

I gulp loud before answering. “In the living room.” I step to the side and he waltzes inside, along with his soldiers and I trail behind them.

“You need to plan his funeral tomorrow.” Devious’ emotionless tone scares me. My pulse thumps loud in my ears and bile tickles the back of my throat.

We enter the living room. Papa stands taller and Devious towers over him

“You’re ready to accept your punishment?” Devious asks and Papa simply nods. His facial expression displays bravery, but his eyes. Terror shines in them.

“If you don’t want to see the inside of your father’s skull then I suggest you leave,” Devious orders me, removing his gun from his holster. He aims it at Papa’s forehead. My papa closes his eyes and puffs out his chest.

Fear eats up every cell in my body and a lump forms in my throat. This is the reason he wanted me to stay in Vegas. He committed a crime against Devious and wanted to make sure I was taken care of by Atrocious.

I rush in front of Papa, blocking him, but it’s no good. I hold my head high, shielding myself with my bravery. You need bravery to face Devious. If you show one crack of weakness, then he’ll use it against you. Slowly, Devious lowers his gun to his side and his face flickers with confusion.

“Please, don’t,” I whisper. “What did he do?”

“Leave, now! Roselyn,” Papa screams, pushing me in the direction of the door, but I keep my shoes glued to the floor.

I turn my view to Devious. His jaw tics and anger warps in his eyes. “He stole a hundred thousand dollars from me.”

“I have thirty thousand dollars and I can work as a maid to pay off his debt,” I say.

I received fifty grand from Mama’s death. Plus, I save the money Papa gives me weekly. The women in the mafia are not allowed to work, they are supposed to wait until their familiga’s marry them off. It’s an ancient rule in the modern world and it’s stupid. I don’t care about working as long as it means saving Papa’s life.

Devious glances between Papa and me. And I can tell that he’s thinking long and hard about something, then he smiles. His smile is more deadly than poison. Papa shakes his head.

“You can’t have her,” Papa says, shoving Devious. Devious takes a few steps forward and glares at him. Nervousness swallows me whole and spits me out

“Grab him,” Devious says.

The two soldiers grab Papa by the arm on each side. Devious stalks up to me and I take a step back. He grips my chin, rubs his thumb on my cheek. I place my hand on his, digging my nails into his flesh and he doesn’t flinch. His eyes
bore into mine and my breath is labored and short.

His cologne is strong and inviting. He smells as if he rolled in a tub of
cinnamon spice.

“You’re going to be my new wife to pay off Lex’s debt.” My heart beats so hard that I think it’s going to burst in my chest. Nauseous hits me like a boxer hitting a punching bag. I can’t believe Devious would ask for my hand in marriage. Especially when he hasn’t even shown any interest in me besides trying to get me to sleep with him.

“What? I’m promised to Atrocious.” I shake my head. The thought of me
marrying him sent a shiver down my spine.

“I’m well aware of your engagement to him.” He grits out and I don’t
miss the jealousy in his tone.

“No.” I challenge and he grinds his perfect white teeth.

“No?” he says as if the words are foreign. The corner of his mouth turns up and I fold my arms across my chest.

“You heard me. What part of no do you not understand? The N or the O?”

The lines on his forehead deepen as he aims his gun at my Papa’s forehead again. “Marry me or watch your father’s brain decorate this tacky ass wall.”

Tears sting my eyes, anger hurdles in my chest, my throat burns. His face is wiped clean from any emotions. Gone is the person who just flirted with me a few minutes ago, replaced with the psychopath and murderer that I heard about. Devious hid that side of him well. I was naïve to believe that he was different, because he is always nice to me.

Papa shakes his head so hard that I think it will roll off his shoulders.
“Don’t do it, Roselyn,” he begs. His eyes flash with warning.

Devious cocks his gun and digs the barrel in Papa’s forehead harder. “My
patience is running thin. I don’t have all day.”

“Fine,” I answer, through clench teeth, and fresh warm tickles down my cheek, like a water hose, then I quickly wipe them away. He tucks his gun back in his holster.

An Interview with the Author of “Under Your Skin” – Rose McClelland, and a Random Drawing @rosieamber1 @RoseMcClelland1

An Interview with the Author: Rose McClelland – Author – “Under Your Skin”

Question: How did this book come to be, what drove you to write the book?

Author pic

“When I wrote this book, I didn’t realise how apt it would be for lockdown”

When I sat down to write “Under your skin”, I obviously had no idea that we’d be in the middle of lockdown during publication. The fact that the main character is trapped indoors is eerily relevant.

Of course there are some differences – my main character is locked inside – whereas we are free to go for our daily walk each day and to pick up essentials.

However there are many similarities. The truth is, that this novel was inspired by the fact that I had started working from home several years before. When my boss first suggested that I could work from home, I jumped at the chance. No daily commute in the pouring rain? Yes please! Rolling out of bed at five to nine instead of the alarm clock blasting at 7am? Yes please again!

However, as the weeks and months rolled on, working from home became a bigger chore than I’d envisaged. I began to realise that all those small pockets of social interaction add up; the chat with the friendly barista in my favourite coffee shop when ordering my morning latte; the small talk with colleagues at the coffee dock; catching up with tit-bits of everyday chat – what their kids were up to, what was good on the tele the night before. Suddenly it was just me and the four walls.

It became a little bit like Stockholm syndrome. I knew I needed to make extra special effort to get out and meet people and to get some daily exercise but quite frankly, I couldn’t be bothered. I became lazy, introverted and even a little depressed. It affected my mental health.

And that’s when I began to write about Hannah being trapped in a basement. Who put her there? Why? And that’s how the story evolved.

Thankfully, I’m much more able to cope with working from home now. I know what works for me and what doesn’t. I know the things I need to do to look after my mental health. And so, in many ways, by the time lockdown came along, I was well and truly used to this way of living. And of course Zoom online meetings happened and that is wonderful because I connect with people more than ever on a daily basis.

When lockdown lifts, I’m looking forward to getting back to my hairdresser. God, I’ve missed her. But as for working from home, rolling out of bed at five to nine and missing the rainy commute, yeah, I’ll keep it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5 out of 5

Psychological thriller that will have you wondering what’s going on, and who you can trust.

Kyle is angry that the police won’t do anything to find his missing wife. She didn’t come home from work and he has no idea where she could be. The police won’t help because she hasn’t been missing long enough to begin a search. Kyle will organize a search and things get more questionable at the end of the day.

Hannah is surprised that Kyle is interested in her. She just started this job and she’s quiet and shy. Kyle and Hannah have a good relationship until after they get married. Hannah isn’t sure what caused the change, but she’s wary of everything now and walks on eggshells.

I enjoyed this book, but I found that there were some gaps as to what was happening and how things progressed. The story is told mostly in the female character perspective. Only the first chapter is in Kyle’s perspective. Which I found interesting and different. I loved the plot and the way that the story was done in the sense that it kept me wondering what was going on, where Hannah was, how she got to where she was, was she being mistreated, was she in danger, and how things would turn out. I love a mystery in a story like this, and the way that the story kept my mind working while reading the story. I enjoy the guessing of a story to figure out the who, what, when, or why, but I want the challenge of multiple characters to have to think about, not being able to figure it out right away and this story definitely challenged my brain. I give this book a 4.5-star review and if you like psychological thrillers, the mystery of figuring out the bad guy, and strong women characters, this book is a perfect choice.
