A Guest Post on The Importance of Beta-Readers – Parallel Lies by Georgia Rose @GeorgiaRoseBook

I do tea break writing. Much of it is piecemeal and most of the time I have my manuscript open and if an idea pops into my head when I’m working I quickly flick across to it, add whatever it is in, then turn back to what I was doing. Sometimes I manage two hours writing in one stretch then do nothing for a week.

As you might imagine working like this is hardly conducive to keeping a hold on the threads of a story. And this is why I use beta readers (test readers) at a very early stage.

I finish my first draft, then I do a quick edit. Because of the way I write I have been known to stop part way through an idea or peter out mid-sentence so I like to make sure I have actually completed the story. It’s not much to ask, is it? And then I send it to my beta readers. Now, some of you will be gasping in horror at the thought of showing anyone your first draft but I do tidy up behind myself along the way as I write so it’s really not that bad. The important thing for me is that being so short of writing time I need input early on. I don’t want to waste time rewriting or editing pages that don’t work in the first place.

Reader

I also want to gauge reader reactions to my story and the characters. For this I need to know that I can trust my beta readers to tell me the truth. I understand could be difficult for them as they are people I know in real life, but those are the rules and with each book they get better at doing so.

My betas have a month (although one of them took far longer than this…ahem… resulting in me tapping my foot, somewhat impatiently!)

I ask them to read it as a reader would. I don’t care at this point about the misuse of apostrophes, the lack (or excess) of commas or anything else (although some of them simply can’t help but wield the red pen!) I just want them to take in the story and flag up anything that hits them in the face as unrealistic, a contradiction, a repetition or just plain wrong.

Editing

I do a feedback session with each of them once they have completed their task to see what they made of it all. This can be pretty brutal (and generally puts me in a terrible mood) but it’s essential as it gives me an initial insight into what the wider reader reaction is going to be.

Reader 1

This time I’d given out five paper copies and one digital copy as I’d given them the choice but in hindsight I think paper copies work best as they are easier for people to scribble over with notes and reminders of what they wanted to say to me.

The feedback is always interesting as without fail every reader picks up something different. I had a wide range of reactions to Parallel Lies. One pretty much loved it all and I think given the changes I then made to it will be even happier with the ending. One truly hated it. They didn’t like Madeleine or what she got up to one little bit. Although they did admit to liking the last third of the book. The others were all somewhere between those extremes but fortunately towards the upper end of liking it.

As writers we know we can’t please everyone. It would be ridiculous to think we could so I was happy with this and it has helped prepare me for what may follow from the readers that pick up Parallel Lies.

Reading

It’s easy to dismiss input if it is not what you are wanting to hear but I was particularly interested in the feedback from the person who hated it. The protagonist in Parallel Lies is Madeleine and she is concerned about how she would be judged in the community she lives in if they found out what she really was so this beta-reader of mine showed that concern to be completely valid. Job done.

Beta readers are invaluable to me as part of my book writing process and I’d be very interested to hear if anyone reading this uses them, and if so how they go about doing so?

Georgia Rose 7

Georgia Rose is a writer and the author of the romantic and suspenseful Grayson Trilogy books: A Single Step, Before the Dawn and Thicker than Water. A short story, The Joker, based on a favourite character from the series followed and is free to download from Amazon.

Her fourth novel, Parallel Lies, a standalone to be released on 12 September 2017, encompasses crime along with Georgia’s usual blending of genre.

Georgia’s background in countryside living, riding, instructing and working with horses has provided the knowledge needed for some of her storylines; the others are a product of her overactive imagination!

She tempers her dislike of Trifle (particularly the jelly soaked cakey bit at the bottom, shudder!), kites and the word wipe, with her love of milk chocolate (nothing fancy mind), anything horse related and the word loquacious.

Her busy life is set in a tranquil part of rural Cambridgeshire in the UK where she lives with her much neglected husband and dog. Their son, currently at university, comes and goes and their daughter, having delighted them all for long enough, has eventually moved out, got married, and is discovering the joys of being all grown up and having a mortgage!

MY Review of Parallel Lies:

Great book! The life of Madeleine Ross, Maddy, is complicated and secretive. She doesn’t let too many people know the real her. She thinks her life is perfect the way it is, now that she has a home of her own and is on her own. She ran away from a man that she felt wasn’t right for her and she created a life for herself in the Country. Although she does worry about how her new neighbors and friends will look at her should her past or real job be discovered. She lives a simple life, has friends, a job she enjoys, and sex on her terms. Things are changing for Maddy though and she has to decide if she’s ready to share the past or her job with others and let them in all the way.

There are a lot of things going on in this book. It is well written and keeps your attention throughout. I give this book a 5 star review because I loved reading about Maddy and her life. She has to figure out if Dan, her new boss and love interest is the “One”. When she figures it out, will it be too late? I look forward to reading more of Georgia Rose’s books and I really hope that there is more to come in Maddy and Dan’s lives. I would like to see what will happen now.

Review of “Mine Forever”, by Mia Ford @author_miaford

An enjoyable story with some twists in it. The co-pilot is a playboy but is very serious when it comes to his job. He isn’t looking for love, but it finds him and he has no idea how it happened. Drew (the co-pilot), lost his love years ago to a tragic accident and since then has shut himself off from love, until he meets Jess (flight attendant) who is kind, considerate, and a mother of a 10 year old girl. Jess is a widow who is now raising her daughter by herself and has not found anyone that she wants to have in her life forever, until she and Drew begin dating and find that they can’t live without each other.
Mia Ford did a great job with this story

Review of: “Darkness Before Dawn”, by Leigh Robbins

Great story! This story is so raw at times and yet, it is also touching. The turmoil that Matthew goes through at the beginning after the explosion is heart wrenching and the details of his injuries is raw. The fact that the nurse in Connecticut doesn’t sugar coat his injuries shows her respect for Matt as a soldier and a man. I love the fact that Matt finds his way and becomes such a great success with his life and that there is more than one HEA. I look forward to reading more in this series as well as more from Leigh Robbins.

Review of “Billionaire Retreat” by Summer Cooper

I loved this story! I laughed, got angry, and teared up reading this book. I loved Nina’s personality, she has a personality that you don’t find very often. She doesn’t have confidence in herself, but she always takes what life gives her and makes due. From the first paragraph in the story I was hooked. “I shouldn’t have worn a thong. I always went overboard and now my exposed butt cheeks were paying the price, I thought to myself, as I attempted not to show how uncomfortable I was sitting on the hot ground waiting for my number to be called.” I wanted to keep reading to see what was going to happen next, why was she wearing a thong and sitting on the hot ground? Great job Summer! I hope there’s more to read about Nina and Griff.

Review of “Absinthe”, by Winter Renshaw

This is the first book I’ve read by Winter Renshaw, and I really enjoyed it. The characters are well developed and original. A principal and one of his students have a connection after they meet through a dating app. This is the only modern connection they have, their real connection is sex and great literature. Literature is what starts their relationship and it ends up being the catalyst to get them back together. The literary love of these characters drew me in. The fact that they were young and yet could connect based on great literature and not from the modern day materialistic views that are so normal was very original. I love that “Absinthe” and “Kerouac” were able to get their HEA as well.
I look forward to reading more of Winter’s books in the future. Winter’s character development is very detailed and the story was very well written.

Review of “Blessed Mayhem”, by Sue Coletta @suecoletta1

Wow! The first thought that comes to my mind at the end of this book. I loved this book. Sue does a great job with her characters and the plot. I loved the detailed information about crows in this book as well. I found this book to be a gripping story and I wanted to read it in one sitting, but unfortunately, life and work got in the way. I hated to put it down and go to bed at night. Sue’s characters are so well written that I can find someone that I know who might be just like them and it makes them that much more real. I love the friendship between Nadine and Shawnee, the fact that they are different personalities makes their friendship so much more entertaining. I love that Sue added some Boston dialect in the book too.

Great story, and characters. I love Sue’s books and I have only just started reading her work, but will be filling my library with her books as soon as I can. This is a 5-star book in my opinion. Thank you for sharing your wonderful story telling talent Sue!

Review of “Kiss Across Worlds (Kiss Across Time Book 7)”, By Tracy Cooper-Posey @TracyCP

A story about time travel, vampires, and the strength of family. The way that a family is brought together from troubles and trials of life. The way that people come together to help each other and fight for each other as a family, even if they aren’t related by blood shows the strength of these characters.

There were a few twists and turns in the book that were surprising. This story kept me turning the pages and wanting to read more even after the end of the book. I really liked this book. It’s the first book I’ve read in the series, but it wasn’t hard to follow the story. I’ll have to get the other books in the series to catch up with the rest of the series. Neven, London, and Remi are great characters and have a great chemistry. They work well together and they’re stronger as a unit of three. I look forward to reading more of this series as well as other books by Tracy Cooper-Posey.

Review of “Invaluable: Trident Code #2”, by Alana Albertson

These two meet in a bar and don’t tell each other who they really are, but they spend one great night together. His loyalty to his commander wins out and it also pays off because they are given the location of where the hostages were last seen. Kyle and his Team land close to the location and end up finding Sara after they find Maya, her best-friend who has escaped the captors with Sara’s help. If you enjoy a love story with suspense  and great alpha hero’s, then you will enjoy reading Alana’s Trident Code Series.

Review of “Hung: (Mister Hotshot Book 1)”, by Anne Marsh

A story of a girl on the run from an ex, who accused her of arson and theft and a Hotshot who wants her and protects her. I enjoyed this book and the characters in it were strong and well developed. I liked Pick and Sarah Jo’s chemistry and their strength as individuals made the book interesting. It’s always hard for a strong woman to give in to a strong man, for fear of losing herself along the way. The fact that Sarah Jo had to finally realize that Pick was not trying to take away her independence, but that he was trying to add to her life showed a different strength for her. She found that giving into Pick and deciding to stay with him was not giving up her independence, but adding to her strength as a woman.

If you like a story with a strong heroine and hero who find each other and make a great couple, then this is the book to read. Pick is an Alph male who can downplay it when it comes to the woman he finds that he wants to spend the rest of his life with.

Review of “Bedroom Rodeo”, by Sarah J. Brooks

I was a little leary in the beginning of this book because of the way Summer was acting. However, I really enjoyed the book once Summer met Tyler. Summer’s kindness and her good side came out when she met Tyler, Faith, and Thomas. This book was a pleasant surprise. I liked how Summer changed and became the real her. This is a story of how the right people can help you find your true self and true love.
