EXCERPT
“Why did you call me ‘Ruby love’?”
He huffs out a breath and drops his gaze to stare at the floor. He shrugs. “It just came out.”
“Love is a pretty powerful word to just come out.”
“Yeah, sure, if I meant anything by it. I didn’t so you can stop worrying.”
“I’m not worried,” I lie. I open the fridge and pull out a beer. “You want one?”
“Am I going to be here long enough to drink it?”
I shrug. “That’s up to you.”
Liam’s head whips in my direction and his eyebrows shoot up in surprise. “Yeah, I’ll take one.” I hand it to him. “Thanks,” he says as he twists the cap off.
We both stand there, silent and drinking the cold Bud Light. When he tosses his empty bottle in the trash under the sink, it clanks with a few other empty bottles, the sound startling me.
“Ruby, we need to talk.”
“Do we?” I counter.
He stares at me as if trying to make up his mind about something. “Forget it.”
Liam stomps to the door and yanks it open. He glances over his shoulder and the hurt in his eyes shatters me. I won’t admit it out loud, but I can’t let him leave. Not like this.
“Wait,” I call just before he pulls the door closed.
He turns around to face me but says nothing.
I drop my gaze and swallow. When I lift my head, I force a smile. “Thank you.”
“For what?” He shuts the door and remains inside. “For picking your ass up off the floor, for cleaning up your head, for fucking you for the last few years, for following your rules, or for leaving so you don’t have to talk?”
His words burn like acid, but I deserve them. Every single one. He’s not going to like my answer but at least it’s the truth.
“All of it.”
