A new writing direction for Eva Charles’ writing career. I haven’t read her books in The New American Royals, and this is the first book I’ve read by her, but I really enjoyed the story and was devastated when the book ended. It ended on a cliff hanger, but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that I have to wait for the next book to finish the story. I was so drawn into the story towards the end that I was shocked it was done.
Julian (JD) Wilder, a young man who describes himself as the devil’s spawn. He is now in control of the family business and will get more power over the business after his father is elected President of the United States. Julian is not thrilled that his father is the President Elect, but he is happy to have the control of the family business that he inherited from his mother and grandfather. Now maybe he can find the information he has been searching for to destroy his father.
Gabrielle Duval, a young woman who is trying to move on with her life now that she has the hotel she has always wanted. She’s moving on after a break up with her fiancé who was too physical with her and left bruises. She thought that her life would be simple and boring, until JD walks into her office the night of the Presidential election and gives her a deal that will help her mother but could ruin her life. She isn’t sure that she can go through with his deal, but she would do anything for her mother.
I really liked this story and it drew me in with the suspense, steam, and love story between JD and Gabrielle. I am anxiously awaiting the second book to find out what’s going to happen. While there is a darkness to this story, I don’t see it as being a really dark story. Perhaps the second book will have more darkness, but I can’t wait to read it and find out. I love the cover too.
I whole heartedly recommend this story to anyone who likes a suspenseful story with an alpha male who will do his best to protect the people he loves and right the wrongs that were done to his family. It’s a story of second chances with suspense and secrets to be revealed. I give this story a 4.5-star review and look forward to reading more of the new chapter in Eva Charles’ writing career.

A tear drops to the sketchbook on my lap, the blob smearing the lead. I wipe it away with the tip of my finger and watch the stain spread to the edge of the page.

I enjoyed reading Taken and Torn, the first two books about the Scafoni and Willow families. This one was just as good if not better in my opinion. I loved how Gregory and Amelia drew out the best in each other. Not that they have a fairy tale story, but that their story starts from a legacy that they can’t shake and ends in a life of light and happiness. Amelia draws the good out of Gregory and they fit perfectly together.
I like how the characters grow in this story, even Sebastian and Helena grow more in this story and the siblings are able to find peace after such a hard start to their relationships. The rivalry for the Scafoni’s and the differences in the Willow’s are pushed aside and the siblings find life and happiness as a family.
I give this story a 4.5-star review and recommend it to anyone who likes dark, suspenseful, and stories of finding the light in life out of the darkness.

This was the first book I’ve read in the Dark Falls, CO series. It was a good story, full of suspense, twists, and a great love story as well. The characters were enjoyable to read, Ariel is a strong woman who is sassy and resourceful. She has been taking care of herself for fourteen years and is able to keep herself safe when she’s being hunted. Rhys is a smart detective who finds himself starting to believe Ariel’s claims that her father was framed. He knows Ariel and is able to keep her focused when she is being questioned by the police. The pages turned quickly, and the story pulled me in from the first page, with the first case.
I give this story a 4.5-star review and recommend it to readers who like thriller, suspense, and crime stories. I hope to read more of this series in the near future.
Wow! This was quite the story. A story of death, destruction, and evil that left me wanting so much more.
Liverpool is going through a dangerous heat wave and there are strange incidents happening as well. Detective Inspector Darren Swift is working diligently to find out what is causing the apparent cases of spontaneous combustion, and he will contact his friend Helen, who was a nun until recently.
Dr. Helen Hope was a Calvinist nun until a recent situation had her rethinking her future. She is now working as a Lecturer at the University and enjoys research on religious matter. After DI Swift calls her for help on his new case, she finds herself immersed in another case where her religious knowledge and research lead to the unthinkable and bizarre.
Helen and DI Swift were first introduced to each other in Catherine Fearns first book Reprobation. DI Swift worked with Helen in that case as well. These two have a tendency to work on their own to solve a case as well as with each other. They both have a mindset of wanting to find the truth by and needing to find the truth. They work well together, and they have become close friends.
Consuming Fire is Catherine Fearns’ second published book and it’s just as good as her first. It is very well written, and it pulled me in from the very beginning of the book and kept my attention throughout the entire story. I will say that I was crushed at the end. I really need more of this story and the conclusion. I loved how she incorporated Ars Adramelechum throughout the story.
I give this story a 5-star review and highly recommend it to anyone who likes police procedural, suspense and the thrill of figuring out who the criminal is, having the pieces of the puzzle fall into place to help the characters find their answers and close a case. In my opinion, this was another great story by Catherine Fearns and I can’t wait to read more.
I read lots of books, from mythology retellings to literary fiction and I love to reread books from childhood, this is a place to voice my thoughts for fun. I also like to ramble about things such as art or nature every now and again.
