THE WORKSHOP (Detective Jason Smith #31) by Stewart Giles

From bestselling author: Stewart Giles comes another brilliant addition to the Detective Jason Smith.

Extensive research has shown that, just like stolen cars that are chopped up and sold in pieces, the human body is worth considerably less than the sum of its parts.

Detective Sergeant Smith is about to be thrown headfirst into the stuff of nightmares.
When the body of a woman is discovered in a field, nobody on the team has seen anything like it. Her head has been removed, as have her arms and legs. Later, at the autopsy Smith learns that most of her vital organs are also missing.

The condition of the second body is even more disturbing and Smith starts to wonder if there’s a monster on the loose.

Meanwhile, an urban legend is spreading like wildfire. The rumour mill is talking of a workshop somewhere in the city – a place where human bodies are sent to be chopped up and distributed all around the world.

Smith soon learns that sometimes urban legends are based on reality, and this is one of those times. As the body count rises, Smith and his team find themselves completely out of their depth. The workshop needs to be shut down, but they have no idea where it is.

Will this be a case that Smith is unable to solve?

What readers are saying about THE WORKSHOP:

The author has well and truly done his homework, its all spot on this subject as you turn the pages. t’s once again another unputdownable read, that readers will love. – Booklover Bev

The story flows well and pulls you right in. The characters gel seamlessly and there is humour in their interaction. This offsets the darkness to a certain extent. The ruthlessness and depravity of those involved is clear, and all for money. I am always glued to these books and have to keep reading. This one was no exception. – Maureen.

The camaraderie between the characters is wonderful and I love Jason’s way of saying things exactly how they are, very little filter if any, but with a heart of gold and determination to see justice done. My only complaint is that I get through these too quickly as they are so compelling. A brilliantly clever, engrossing read. Five big stars. – Misfits Farm.

This makes an interesting and shocking plot. A modern slant on a Gothic theme. I liked the attention to historical facts which added to the authenticity. Entertaining, gripping, engaging and surprising – all the elements of a five star read. Highly recommended. – Carol

Stewart Giles – Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.

In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.

3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor: Cornwall series.

The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.

I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.

After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brought together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.

The Miranda trilogy is something totally different. A psychological thriller trilogy. It is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before.

The Detective Jason Smith series continues to grow. I also have another series featuring an Irish detective who relocated to Guernsey, the Detective Liam O’Reilly series. There are also 3 stand alone novels.

My Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 out of 5

Wow! The DS Jason Smith Thrillers are dark, and deep, but this one was really dark and a bit unsettling. To think it’s 2025 and things like this could be happening in the world, Yes, I know this is fiction, but if we really think about it, a lot of these stories could be real.

DS Jason Smith and his team are working tirelessly again to find the dregs of mankind to solve some disturbing cases. This story will take Jason and his partner to Spain, and what they find there is deception, but also some truths.

I love the DS Jason Smith stories and even though this particular story was unsettling and a bit macabre, it was still a great story and addition to the series. DS Smith and the other detectives work well together and they work hard to solve their cases. I love the characters, the snarkiness of DS Smith, and his dedication to his job and his family. I look forward to the next book by Stewart Giles in this series.
